Texas State Capitol Rotunda

The Texas State Capitol is undoubtedly one of the most photographer-friendly public buildings I’ve ever had the pleasure to visit (and I’ve visited it a great deal over the last couple of decades). Not only is access easy despite new security checkpoints, it’s also open late every night. If you are in Austin, make sure to visit the building and take one of the free guided tours.

Despite the apparent simplicity of this shot, getting a decent image of the interior of the dome is surprisingly tricky due to the enormous difference in light levels from the sunlit area near the apex and the dimmmer, lower levels. One way around this is to shoot the building at night when there are fewer people around and no sunlight. The other is to blend multiple exposures to even out the light levels as has been done here.

Prints of this image are available with widths between 29″ and 60″.
